Dr. Richard Laws

D. Richard Laws received his Ph.D. from Southern Illinois University-Carbondale in 1969. He was the director of the Sexual Behavior Laboratory at Atascadero State Hospital in California from 1970-1985; project director at the Florida Mental Health institute, Tampa, from 1985-1989; manager of forensic psychology at Alberta Hospital, Edmonton, Alberta from 1989-1994; and as a psychologist with Adult Forensic Psychiatric Community Services in Victoria, British Columbia from 1994 until his retirement in 1999. He is presently self-employed as Co-Director of the Pacific Psychological Assessment Corporation and Director of Pacific Design Research in Victoria, BC. He is past president of the Association for the Treatment of Sexual Abusers. He is adjunct faculty at Simon Fraser University in British Columbia and is Honourary Professor at the University of Birmingham (UK). Dr. Laws is known in the field of sexual deviation as a developer of assessment procedures and behavior therapies.

He is the author of numerous articles and book chapters in this area and serves on the editorial board of several journals. He is the editor of Relapse Prevention with Sex Offenders (1989), co-editor with W.L. Marshall and H.E. Barbaree of Handbook of Sexual Assault (1990), co-editor with W.T. O’Donohue of Sexual Deviance (1997; 2008), co-editor with S.M. Hudson and T. Ward of Remaking Relapse Prevention with Sex Offenders (2000), co-editor with T. Ward and S.M Hudson of Sexual Deviance: Issues and Controversies (2003), co-editor with D. Thornton of Cognitive Approaches to the Assessment of Sexual Interest in Sexual Offenders (2008) and co-author with Tony Ward of Desistance from Sex Offending (2011).

Dr. Carmen Gress

Dr. Carmen Gress is a researcher and consultant on issues related to offender assessment, risk management, treatment, and program evaluation. She received her Ph.D. in Educational Psychology in 2007 from the University of Victoria, BC and completed a post-doc at Simon Fraser University. Dr. Gress has worked with a variety of professionals such as psychologists, psychiatrists, probation officers and case managers as well as adult and youth offenders, including sexual offenders, mentally ill offenders, and violent offenders. She was Board Chair for a local association working with child victims of sexual abuse and is an active member of the Public Policy committee of the Association for the Treatment of Sexual Abusers (ATSA). In 2003, Dr. Gress received the ATSA Student Research Grant (Falconer Grant): Children or Adolescents Who Sexually Offend.

She has published various articles and chapters on cognitive measures of sexual interest, child pornography, self-regulated processes and computer supported collaborative learning, and public policy pieces specific to sexual offending. Her research interests include the assessment and promotion of self- and group- regulatory processes, assessment of characteristics that indicate failure or dysfunction in self-regulation, and attention-based assessments of sexual interest. Dr. Gress is also the Director of Research, Planning, and Offender Programming with BC Corrections, Ministry of Public Safety & Solicitor General, Canada.

David Glasgow holds a BSc (upper second) in Psychology (Leicester, 1980) and a Masters degree in Clinical Psychology (Liverpool, 1983). He has worked in forensic clinical psychology for 30 years. His research and clinical practice has focussed on developing interview and assessment techniques specifically for forensic purposes. David’s special interests include interviewing when the interviewee has special needs by virtue of their age or psychological disorder, and also computer assisted assessment. For many years he has carried a mixed assessment and treatment caseload representing a range of forensic issues, and psychopathology, including personality disorder, mental illness and learning disability.

In 1991 he was elected to the National Executive Committee of NOTA, (the national association for the assessment and treatment of sex offenders), until 1992. He was a member of the Policy & Ethics Sub Committee developing guidance on multidisciplinary practice, sexually explicit materials and community monitoring of sex offenders, (including the Sex Offender Act). In April 1994 he was appointed Consultant Forensic Clinical Psychologist with the Forensic & Special Care Service of Leeds Community and Mental Health Teaching NHS Trust. In 1998 he moved to Calderstones NHS Trust, in a similar role.

David left his academic and NHS posts in 2005, and formed the Carlton Glasgow Partnership, offering a range of forensic and clinical psychology services, including assessments of risk and psychopathology in child protection and criminal proceedings. He also conducts and evaluates forensic investigative (‘ABE’) interviews with children and people with disabilities.
