The Chart of Interpersonal Reactions in Closed Environments (CIRCLE)

Interpersonal style refers to the characteristic ways in which a person manages his or her relationships with others, and is a significant feature of personality. For example, people can be differentiated by the extent to which they are likely to be forceful, argumentative, docile, sociable, and so forth. The Chart of Interpersonal Reactions in Closed Living Environments (CIRCLE) is an observation scale that permits staff to record an individual’s interpersonal style as it is exhibited within an institutional context, such as a secure hospital or prison. It is based on an established system for describing interpersonal behaviour, and is the outcome of several years’ research with mentally disordered offenders detained in maximum security hospitals in Britain.
CIRCLE relies only on staff observation, and is therefore an alternative to traditional self-report methods for assessing personality. It can be used to identify problem areas in an individual’s behaviour for case formulation and planning, for monitoring longer-term treatment effects, and for research.
NOTE: The Risk for Sexual Violence Protocol (RSVP) is an excellent companion instrument for CIRCLE.
