The aim of this manual is to provide an overview of the pathways model to offending developed by Ward and Hudson (1998).

In order to facilitate clinicians in the practical application of the model the manual outlines the key issues for both assessment and treatment. It begins with a general introduction to describe the development of the model and to compare it with the limitations of the relapse prevention model, which has been widely adopted in the treatment of sex offenders. It then explains the model and its separate phases in detail. Following this is a section containing case examples as way of illustrating each of the four pathways. The manual then contains a section highlighting the key indicators for assessment and allocation to each of the pathways to facilitate clinicians appropriately assigning offenders to their correct pathway.

The implications of each of the pathways for intervention are then discussed, given that each pathway presents differing treatment needs. Next is a section describing the empirical research studies to date, which have investigated the practical applications of the model in a range of clinical settings. The final section of the manual presents more complex case material to illustrate each pathway and the treatment needs and possible areas of intervention for each.
